who

The ethos of Shakti Tantra is to provide experiences and teachings that can help us find contentment, inner joy, delight, innocence and aliveness. When our illusions, confusions, doubts, denials and unworthiness are lifted, there lies our ecstatic nature, our essential being.

Our society does not encourage these states of love, beauty, joy & peace. We long for these qualities and out of our grief and longing we armour ourselves and get on with what we are encouraged to do, which is building our materialistic world, as though this itself was compensation for true pleasure.

Our anti ecstatic society promotes states of guilt, shame and judgement in which the split between heart and sex, the lack of honour around our sexuality, means that we become less than whole. Shakti Tantra’s purpose is to help heal the shame and guilt around our sexuality and to help us treat our bodies with love and respect. When we move to a place of seeing our sexuality as sacred, we can touch base with our ecstatic nature that is full of beauty.

Shakti Tantra was formed in 2001 and offers programmes for women, men and couples and private consultations. The workshops focus on dealing with whatever obstacles keep us from our pleasure and the basis of the workshops is to provide a very safe container in which participants feel able to confront the defences and attitudes that inhibit and restrict the flow of their sexual energy, which is their life energy.

The content of the workshops includes movement, active meditations, tantric structures and rituals and shamanic exercises – everything is an invitation.

Hilly Spenceley is a powerful and dynamic sexual/spiritual teacher. She is a catalyst and initiator. As mother of 6 and grandmother of 9, she is the ultimate wise women and dark angel, working at all times with the shadow. Her approach is very grounded and practical, coming from her deep understanding of family and intimate relationships. She is known for her wisdom, joy, love and total acceptance within her workshops and is very skilled and experienced in running groups of which she has over 30 years practice.

The earlier part of her life was working deeply within the sexual arena….. practicing and teaching meditation and hatha yoga. Her quest for bringing these two paths together came about when she met John Hawken in the early nineties where she did the first tantra couples training in the UK. She was so struck by the deep and meaningful work that 100 % changed her life for the better, that her and John continued to work together until 2007…… together they created the Skydancing tantra individuals training and also taught the Skydancing couples trainings. They were the first team to teach tantra in the UK and their work influences a number of the tantra schools running the UK today.

In 2001 Hilly created Shakti Tantra which initially was only working with women in a tantric setting. She was joined quite quickly by Sue Newsome, her co-teacher and dreamer and then Martin Hellawell organiser and teacher on the mixed program. Together they have created a very leading edge tantra school, that not only works with women but includes an individuals training, also working with all aspects of sexuality and they are constantly and consistently at the forefront of what is happening around the world within the consciousness of sexual energy. Hilly’s deep passion is to give each participant various tools and workable models so they have the freedom to live the life they choose. She brings immense experience to her work, including bahkti yoga, past life therapy, metaphysical evolutionary skills, meditation and shamanic teachings.

She excels within the knowledge of sacred sexuality, body worship rituals, ceremony and rites of passage, sensual touch and unconditional love of the ‘divine feminine’ and believes that if you use your sexual energy with consciousness, it is a catalyst for great change within your life. She has been studying the science of tantra both in the east and west for many years and she validates the body as a source of information and tremendous wisdom. To relax in the wisdom of a mature woman, to be held in a safe, grounded and honoring way is truly an experience of total love, acceptance and nurture.

Hilly lives with her beloved, in the deep and meaningful land at the end of England in south west Cornwall, a stone’s throw from Lands End with the sea surrounding her on three sides. Here she celebrates her large family, grows her own veg , has bees, dogs, cats and chickens……eats organically and meditates. She truly has created the life that brings her immense joy and pleasure. Hilly is a member of the British Association of Sexual Educators (BASE), the Association of Sexual Energy Professionals (ASEP) and the Sexual Health and Disability Alliance (SHADA).

Sue Newsome is a truly inspirational guide and facilitator of tantra and sexuality teachings. She is passionate about following a path of discovery, learning and expansion. Her embodiment of her own sexuality serves as a major motivation for men and women to step out of their story and evolve from their guilt and shame around their sexuality.

After graduating in Business Studies, Sue enjoyed a very successful career in IT before setting up her own training company providing business training in the UK and internationally. During this time, she started her own path of personal development which included Transpersonal Psychotherapy and Dreamwork and she gained a qualification in counseling. This led her to tantra and she has been studying and practicing tantra and sacred sexuality with SkyDancing and Chuluquai Quodoushka for over 10 years and has taken this journey of joy and devotion with her husband Martin. Sue started working with Shakti Tantra in 2001 and, after serving a four-year apprenticeship, she now co-runs the business with Hilly Spenceley.

Tantra has totally transformed Sue’s relationships with herself and with her beloved, Martin. It has given her knowledge and experience of the many ways that intimacy can be created in relationship and also a clear understanding of the differences between male and female sexuality. Her vocabulary for pleasure has increased so that sex with her beloved has become an exquisite adventure and celebration. Sue loves her body, owns her sexual yearnings and totally believes that sexuality sits at the core of being human. The teachings of tantra continue to inspire Sue to consciously choose relationship and to create one of love and value that can provide a strong foundation for ever more discoveries.

Sue’s down-to-earth attitude and grounded approach form a strong foundation for this work. She brings great enthusiasm and a true sense of fun and adventure and her willingness to face her own blocks means that she facilitates from a place of great empathy. She is a natural educator who encourages others to find their authentic expression of their sexuality and for them to do this in a responsible and aware manner.

Sue was honoured to receive an award for her work from Outsiders in 2008 and this has provided opportunities for her to develop her approach to offer tantra to people with disabilities to help them overcome difficulties to sexual fulfillment. Sue is a member of the International Association of Sexual Educators, Counselors and Therapists, is on the Executive Committee of BASE, British Association of Sexual Educators and is a member of Sexual Health and Disability Alliance. She is committed to making the teachings of Tantra more accessible to the general public and professionals alike to achieve a greater consciousness about sexuality in the UK today.

Sue lives with Martin in Stroud in Gloucestershire, where she practices Tai Chi and is a student of Ballroom and Latin American dancing.
